The 400 series have a very similar chemical composition of chromium up to 11%, up to 1% of manganese more than series 300 grade. Series 400 pipes can be easily affected by corrosion and rust in some conditions where the desired condition is not filled. Heat treatment is desirable for the 400 series pipes and can be hardened through heat treatment as well.
Quality control
Series 400 has a high carbon content that gives it a martensitic crystalline structure that provides high strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, the corrosion resistance of martensitic steel is not better than austenitic steel types. SS 409 pipes are available steel grade that holds chromium and titanium, is ferric stainless steel that finds various applications such as exhaust systems, heat exchangers piping and tubing, furnace equipment, etc.
Manufacturing process SS 409M pipes are lower carbon version steel grade and can be made available at dimensions commonly from NPS 14-30 with schedule 5s, which is extra light, and schedule 10s as a light for the wall thickness. Due to the low carbon, 409M is used under the desired atmospheres.
SS 410 is the highest modified version of the 400 series with excellent corrosion resistance and can also be used across high-stress environments. SS 410 has not only high corrosion resistance but also high strength and hardness. The presence of chromium holds the temperature resistance even in favorable environments.
